What do Battery Hens have to do with the UK Spending Cuts? Who cares!

What I'm about to reveal is not earth shattering news! You already know that the world is going through tough economic times at the moment. EVERYONE is affected in someway as the cost of living goes up and wages are either frozen or going down.

Nov. 7, 2010 - PRLog -- Who caused it?  Who cares at this stage but suffice to say that it isn't going away any time soon.

NOT convinced?  Only a couple of weeks ago Chancellor George Osborne announced that approximately 490,000 public sector jobs are likely to be lost in the UK Spending Cuts Review.

Budgets are being slashed left, right and center and many government departments have been hit.  Even the Queen felt the weight of the axe in the Government spending review so if it's affecting the wealthy, be sure that it will affect everyone.

Here's the bottom line: it's tough out there.  The UK has a £842 billion national debt.  The US is reported to have over a trillion dollar deficit and the rest of the world isn't fairing so well either.

We all need to simplify and reduce our outgoings just to survive on the chicken feed obtained from our 9 to 5 jobs. It's also very stressful for everyone who's worried about paying the bills and making ends meet.

Now to Liz from RehomingBatteryHens.co.uk:

Liz rehomed eight battery hens last year and has never looked back.  She is passionate about her hens and has now increased her flock of rescued hens to 19.  Battery hens are bred to lay 6 to 7 eggs a week.  When their production drops to 5 or 6 eggs a week, they are either dispatched and replaced or if really lucky rescued by volunteers who give them a new home to live out the rest of their lives.

Liz is making a difference to the hens lives as they now have a life of luxury.  They have a big pen to scratch around in, are fed organically and are even let out to free range round the whole of the garden.

So, let’s send Liz a bouquet of flowers and a box of chocolates! But what does Rehoming Hens have to do with this tough economy?

Well it's simple.

First, Liz is SAVING money.  Even though the hens are technically “spent”, which means they are no longer laying the optimum number of eggs, they still lay a good number every week.  Certainly too many for a family of three to eat; even on pancake day!

Second, Liz is MAKING some pin money.  She sells the sixty or so surplus eggs every week to friends and family for £2 a half dozen and there is always demand for the eggs as they are rather tasty and come from organically fed hens.  The hens cost about £10 - £12 a week to keep, including food, bedding and supplements.  So when you take into account that she never buys eggs, she makes £10 and £12 a week.  Now realistically, this may only be “chicken feed” in this tough economy however not many hobbies pay for themselves.

And there are other side effects too:  Nothing is quite as CALMING as spending some quality time with a flock of hens down the bottom of the garden and in these tough economic times we could all do with a little de-stressing.

And of course, one mustn't forget the most important thing – nothing beats the taste of a fresh organic egg straight from the hen coop.

Okay, so this press release is a little tongue in cheek however in these tough economic times Liz and her family always enjoy good quality organic eggs from a flock of loved and well looked after rescued battery hens.
