Glaswegian Dental Practice Offers Free Mouth Cancer Screening

Oct. 28, 2010 - PRLog -- The campaign, organised by The British Dental Health Foundation (BDHF) and dental payment plan specialist Denplan, seeks to raise awareness of mouth cancer and urges people to get screened at their local dentist, GP, or other healthcare professional. The BDHF advises: “If in doubt, get checked out.”

Commenting on the campaign, Dr Rita Ahmad, owner of Bath Street Dental said: “Mouth cancer causes one death every five hours and a 41% rise in cases over the last decade* has been attributed to a lack of public awareness.

“With this in mind, we’re keen to raise awareness of mouth cancer and are welcoming both existing patients and non-patients to drop into the practice this November for a free mouth cancer screening.”**

Dr Nigel Carter, Chief Executive of the BDHF says: “Regular professional check-ups and self examinations are the best route to early detection of mouth cancer. Early detection is proven to increase survival chances to more than 90%.”

Dr Rita Ahmad adds: “Catching mouth cancer early is very important - that’s why we routinely conduct a soft tissue check during all patient appointments. We also encourage patients to keep an eye on their mouths between appointments and to let us know if they are concerned about any unusual symptoms. These include ulcers that don’t heal within three weeks, red or white patches and any other unusual lumps or swellings in the mouth.”
