Oct. 27, 2010 - PRLog -- As winter approaches and the temperature decreases, the volume of need increases throughout St. Joseph County.  Every year during this time, families have a hard time trying to keep up with their bills and heat their homes adequately.

Fortunately, United Way's 211 Information & Referral Service is here to help. Upon calling 211, those in need of utility assistance will be directed to human service organizations that can provide the assistance that is needed.

Additionally, through a “50/50” grant, United Way of St. Joseph County will be offering assistance to individuals participating in budgeting training and who are attempting to pay their utilities. To qualify for the program, people can register with the Community Access Network (CAN), agree to meet monthly with a case coordinator to work toward a goal of their determination and attend one or more sessions with a budget coach. The grant will match the first $50 paid each month by the client for up to five months of the moratorium, thus the name "50/50."

Other St. Joseph County businesses and organizations have also stepped up to address this seasonal need.  For anyone who has been screened by and has qualified for the Energy Assistance Program (EAP), the Northern Indiana Public Service Co. (NIPSCO) will be reducing deposits to $50 and the Indiana Michigan Power’s Energy Share program will be distributing a few grants.

Additionally, as in years past, Indiana's Energy Assistance Program will be offering credits toward gas and electric bills during the winter months. To qualify for assistance, contact REAL Services (574-232-6501 or 800-225-3367) to schedule an appointment to determine eligibility.

For more information on any of these programs and for help keeping your home and your family warm this winter season, please call 211.
