Faculty Lecture at Armstrong is November 12

Oct. 25, 2010 - PRLog -- The 2010-2011 Armstrong Atlantic State University Robert I. Strozier Faculty Lecture Series continues on Friday, November 12 at 12:10 in University Hall 156 on the Armstrong campus, 11935 Abercorn Street. The lecture is free and open to the public.

Ray R. Hashemi, professor of computer science in the Department of Information, Computing and Engineering, will present “Deriving Policies From Data.”

The popular paradigm in policy making is that policy makers arrive at a policy and then collect data to show the effectiveness of the policy. Conveniently, however, the collected data about a policy almost always supports the policy, rarely suggests minor modifications to the policy and almost never rejects the policy unless the policy maker loses his seat. As an alternative paradigm, policies may be automatically derived from the collected data. This lecture explores research that tested this new paradigm by deriving policies for vessel traffic in the treacherous inland waterway of the lower Mississippi River. Using U.S. Coast Guard data collected for a period of five years about vessel accidents, an extended analysis approach was used to deliver three sets of policy decision scenarios dealing with a series of increasingly dangerous situations for vessel traffic.
