Bits from Bytes Acquired By 3D Systems

Oct. 5, 2010 - PRLog -- Bristol-based Bits from Bytes has been acquired by a major US company in a deal that will see it expand its operation and increase supply of its revolutionary 3D printers to markets across the world.

Bits from Bytes, which is located on the Hither Green Industrial Estate in Clevedon and manufactures its BfB 3000 and RapMan 3D printers, has been bought by 3D Systems, a NASDAQ quoted company which has its main HQ in Rock Hill, South Carolina and operations across the globe.

Seen by the US giant as a major move towards its strategic objective of providing access to 3D print technology for all, the acquisition will see the entire Bits from Bytes management team remain while operations will continue from its Clevedon HQ.

Manufacturing affordable kits and printers ranging between £800 to £2500, Bits from Bytes has opened up the world of 3D printing to a range of sectors where previously the price was too prohibitive with machines typically costing around £15,000.

It means businesses, those in the education sector and hobbyists can transform their Computer Aided Design (CAD) based drawings into real three-dimensional models.

Employing 13 people the company was set up by Ian Adkins and Iain Major in  December 2008 and accounted for 17% of all 3D printer sales worldwide ranking it second in total shipments in 2009*.
