Stone Setting Technique
Simply Beautiful Bezels by Tom and Kay Benham

This technique was inspired by Tom and Kay’s minimal opal and lapis intarsia stones. They didn’t want to distract from the beauty of the stones, so they decided that the simple bezel of 14K gold would make the perfect frame for the stones. The Benham’s include a list of materials, tools and sources, to help anyone trying this technique. They offer detailed photos to illustrate help with each step of the directions.

Bezels for Miniature Stakes by William Fretz

Not all stones are the same size or shape. When a stone is an unusual shape, standard jewelry bezel mandrels can’t be used for fabrication. Fretz explores three different types of stones and how to fabricate the appropriate bezels. First is the large symmetrical oval cab shape, in this case a cameo with an open backed bezel. The second bezel is a freeform stone with a solid back. Lastly, the third type is a faceted stone with sharp corners and flared curved sides. Fretz describes how to use miniature smithing stakes to fabricate unusual bezel shapes. There are detailed instructions, with photos to match. Each of his techniques has a tool and materials list.
