| ![]() Ayurvedic Tonic for Longevity ChyavanPrash From India, Dr.Abhay Kumar Pati, Hayward, CA, USAChyavanPrash (pronounced chai’-van-prash) is a marvelous fruit and herb tonic that has been passed from generation to generation in India for more than 5000 years. It is probably the most complete herbal tonic in the world, Dr.Abhay Kumar Pati.
By: Dr. Kumar Pati, CEO Best Nutrition Products It starts with Amala, or Indian Gooseberry, which contains a special form of vitamin C that is stable even when heated. One Amala fruit has as much C as three to six lemons. It is also a good source of fiber, and it has a tart, bracing flavor. Prime quality ChyavanPrash provides 50 to 60 herbs, extracts and minerals, along with the Amala, covering the whole range of Ayurvedic herbalism, thus addressing a broad spectrum of health issues. Its preparation starts with boiling the Amala fruit and many of the herbs for a long time. They are then sautéed in ghee (clarified butter) while adding more herbs. This blends the flavors and essences, and helps stabilize the ingredients. Next, more herbs and minerals are added. Finally, dehydrated sugar cane juice and honey are added, to keep the mixture fresh, to carry the herbs into the body through the process of metabolism, and to activate the body’s energies. (Note: Ayurvedic physicians consider dehydrated cane juice to be totally different from refined sugar. It is a health-giving product, rich in minerals.) The Indian word for it is “Jaggery.” The Origin of ChyavanPrash The recipe was said to have been given to a great sage named Chyavana by the physicians to the gods! Chyavana was one of the founders of the healing science of Ayurveda, which means knowledge of life, or the science of longevity. When Chyavana was a very old man, the king gave him his young daughter, Sukanya, in marriage. With her help, he got the physicians to the gods to give him the secrets of rejuvenation. Chyavana recovered his lost youth and was able to have a long and happy marriage with the princess Sukanya. With this kind of reputation, plus a totally unique flavor, ChyavanPrash has become the favorite tonic in India. Many people take it regularly. Some prepare it at home; but it is readily obtained at Ayurvedic pharmacies. Modern research methods are now being used to evaluate the effects of ancient Ayurvedic formulas such as ChyavanPrash. This research has often validated the Ayurvedic theory behind the formulas, as well as identifying their actions in Western terms. In Ayurveda, ChyavanPrash is the most important of the Rasayanas. Rasayanas are special combinations of fruits and herbs designed to open the mind, spirit and senses; strengthen and cleanse the body; and fortify the immune system. In fact, the name Rasayana means food that keeps old age and disease away. The Benefits of taking ChyavanPrash This unique tonic provides nutrients and tonification to the nervous, endocrine and reproductive systems. It can also assist in weight control, whether one may be underweight or overweight, by balancing the metabolic processes. ChyavanPrash is given to people recovering from chronic lung conditions, such as pneumonia or tuberculosis, to help build strength back up and support the respiratory precess. However it is most often used as a general tonic to help maintain excellent health. How ChyavanPrash Works Ayurveda views our bodies as being organized into two interactive systems. The first is a set of three body energies, or Doshas, that must be kept in balance. They are: the air or movement principle; the fire or metabolism principle; and the water or structure principle. The second system is the seven constructing elements of the body, or Dhatus. They are: plasma; blood cells and tissues; muscles; fat; bones; bone marrow and nerve tissue; and the reproductive fluids. The body stays healthy if these Dhatus are strong and healthy; the defense system of the body remains powerful and diseases cannot invade the body. ChyavanPrash is specifically designed to nourish the seven Dhatus and balance the three Doshas, or body energies. It does this both directly, by providing the proper nutrients, and indirectly, by tonifying the digestive, respiratory, and glandular systems. In the next issue we will explain in more detail how the ingredients act on the Dhatus and Doshas. We will also look at how the Rasayana fruit and herb combinations, including ChyavanPrash, fit into the science of Ayurveda as a whole. Pregnant women, and people with certain affictions gastric ulcers, acidic urine, watery stools excess stomach gas, or nocturnal discharge problems should consult with an Ayurvedic physician before taking ChyavanPrash since it may not be appropriate to take it alone under these circumstances; How to use ChyavanPrash It is recommended that one take ChyavanPrash twice daily with a cup of scalded cow’s or goat’s milk. People on a milk free diet can eat it with warm water or herb tea or a grain beverage. Adults start with 1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon and work up to one 3 teaspoons per serving. Children should take 1/2 teaspoon or less per serving. The milk may be taken at same time, to soften the flavors, or up to fifteen minutes after taking the ChyavanPrash. Milk balances the spiciness, and caries the nutrients through the body. Goat’s milk is more easily digested and less mucus forming than cow’s milk, and is the ideal companion for ChyavanPrash. To get the most value from ChyavanPrash, the diet should emphasize fruits, vegetables and whole grains, also seafood poultry and dairy products if you are not sensitive to them. One should avoid pungent, spicy and acidic foods as well as processed foods like white flour and sugar. With regular use of ChyavanPrash, even in the modern age you can enjoy good health and long life, following the ancient path of Ayurveda. # # # Dr.Abhay Kumar Pati, Best Nutrition Products, Inc.Hayward, California, USA and Biotechayur, Odisha, India manufacturer of a large number of bestnutrition, glutathione, ashwagandha, gymnema, diabotica, gugul, psyllium, boswella, vitamins, minerals, Chinese and Ayurvedic herbal, nutritional supplements, phytochemicals, raw materials of standardized molecules of plants and fruit extracts.
