Sept. 17, 2010 - PRLog -- Science, Engineering and Mathematics Link Inc. (SEM Link) through it Math and Science Career Academy hosts 2010 National Chemistry Week Celebrations in Metropolitan Atlanta and San Francisco Bay Area on October 17-23, 2010.  These celebrations will take place at local schools and community organizations to introduce children to chemistry through hands on activities, real world applications and career exploration.  In both Metropolitan Atlanta and San Francisco Bay Area, volunteers will go to local schools to conduct hands on activities.  On Saturday, October 23, 2010, SEM Link will collaborate with its Bay Area community partner ASA Community Science Center to host a community celebration that is free and open to the public from 10:00am-2:00 pm at the ASA Community Science Center located at 4252 Broadway in Oakland, CA.

The National Chemistry Week (NCW) is a program of the American Chemical Society (ACS); for more information visit www.acs.org/ncw.  NCW is a part of ACS’s efforts to direction attention to chemistry and its contributions to society. Each year it reaches millions of people with celebrations directly affiliated with ACS, its members and those at schools and community organizations. Each year as a part of SEM Link’s Math and Science Career Academy, a national chemistry week celebration takes place at local schools, libraries and/or community organizations. These celebrations connect K-12 students to chemistry professionals to provide opportunities to meet and interact with them to learn more about chemistry and careers in the field. The 2010 celebration is the second year the Georgia Institute of Technology student chapter of the National Organization of Black Chemists and Chemical Engineers (NOBCChE) will volunteer with us to conduct hands on activities at a local middle school in Atlanta. “People don’t realize how much chemistry is a part of our everyday life such as food, medicine, cosmetics and many more real world applications.” Executive Director and Founder Tokiwa T.Smith said. “As an individual with a degree in a chemistry related field, I am always excited about opportunities to expose K-12 students to chemistry through fun and exciting hands on activities”.

SEM Link is a tax-exempt nonprofit organization, founded in 2005 in Atlanta, Georgia, that promotes student achievement and career exploration in math and science for K-12 students by connecting them with individuals with backgrounds in science, engineering and mathematics. SEM Link has a two-core program model, Experimental Design Program and Math and Science Career Academy, that provide students with opportunities to develop their math and science skills by enhancing the classroom learning experience and teaching them skills that are transferable to other areas of life. Since its inception SEM Link has enhanced educational experiences for over 1000 Metro Atlanta youth through hands on math and science activities, career exploration and exposure to real world applications of math and science.  In January 2010, SEM Link expanded its programs to the Bay Area to enhance the educational experiences for Bay Area youth.
