The Black Swans, November 3
The Black Swans make their Mayne Stage debut 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, November 3. In July 2008, The Black Swans’ friend and band mate, Noel Sayre, passed away. He was a great violinist and a great person who helped define the band in sound and spirit.

Columbus, Ohio natives, The Black Swans, are currently mixing their new album, Don’t Blame the Stars, a concept album about being agnostic and placing your faith in music and friendship instead of a higher power, with nods to R&B, country, and rock and name-checking Joe Tex, Roy Orbison, Jimi Hendrix, Sam Cooke, Iris Dement, and many others. It was recorded (mostly) in a garage and mixing in a kitchen. Noel played on most of the songs just weeks before he passed.

In late June 2007, DeCicca co-produced the first new recordings by 1970's Monument recording artist, Larry Jon Wilson, and they featured Noel Sayre on violin on four tracks. Wilson was featured in the cult documentary Heartworn Highways that also includes early portraits of Guy Clark and Townes Van Zandt. These new recordings took place in Perdido Key, Florida. It was released in June 2008 on U.K. label 1965 Records. Drag City released it in the U.S. in summer 2009.

Currently, DeCicca is producing a new album by Bob Martin, whose 1973 RCA album Midwest Farm Disaster is a classic and a favorite. The Black Swans’ Chris Forbes (electric guitar) and Canaan Faulkner (bass) also lend their talents to the recording.

The Black Swans have a limited vinyl release coming out soon on St. Ives, called Words Are Stupid, a concept album that includes Noel.

Catch The Black Swans at Mayne Stage November 3. Tickets are $10 and go on sale Friday, September 17. Purchase tickets at www.maynestage.com or (773) 381-4554.

Two Hours Traffic, November 10
Two Hours Traffic plays Mayne Stage at 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, November 10. Their most recent album, Territory, is the follow-up to the Charlottetown band’s Polaris Prize nominated and internationally acclaimed sophomore album, Little Jabs. Once again produced by Joel Plaskett, Territory builds on the promise of Little Jabs as the band continues to write and record sunny pop gems for the heart and head.

Territory, however, also finds Two Hours Traffic discovering the shadows at the side of the road. Right from the get go this becomes apparent as the gold into lead alchemy of the rousing opener Noisemaker kicks in and by the time the title track tells its tale of disillusionment and betrayal you know you are settling in for a drive on the darker side. Indeed, songs such as Weightless One, Drop Alcohol, Wicked Side, and Lost Boys all explore the approaching dusk but just like the more hopeful tracks on the album (Happiness Burns, Sing A Little Hymn) they all lock into the close your eyes, sing along choruses and instantly memorable lyrics that have put Two Hours Traffic on the melodic map.

Initially conceived as a two-piece, lead singer Liam Corcoran and guitarist Alec O'Hanley recruited bassist Andrew MacDonald and drummer Derek Ellis while attending university in their hometown of Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island. After releasing their April Storm EP in 2003, a friendship was struck up with Halifax hero Joel Plaskett who offered to produce the band's first proper album. While their eponymous debut and their follow up Isolator EP were received warmly by critics, it wasn't until 2007's breakthrough Little Jabs that the world really took notice. Appearing on dozens of year-end best of lists, Little Jabs also garnered an ECMA for Best Pop Recording and was a finalist for the coveted Polaris Music Prize. Add to this, three coast to coast tours, appearances at festivals such as Hillside, CMJ and SXSW and shows across the Atlantic, and Two Hours Traffic is one of the most visible and successful Canadian independent acts of the last two years.

Don’t miss Two Hours Traffic at Mayne Stage on November 10. Tickets are $10 at the door and $8 in advance at www.maynestage.com or (773) 381-4554.
