the Box gallery presents The Icarus Paradox: a Steampunk Commemoration

Sept. 14, 2010 - PRLog -- With The Icarus Paradox, The Box contemporary art gallery commemorates the historic anniversary of the first solo transatlantic balloon flight—an event that not only set a milestone in aviation history, but also raised questions of technology and novelty, humanity and its abilities and limitations.  In the classical myth, Icarus attempts to escape imprisonment by fleeing his captors with wings of wax and feathers, but negligently and euphorically flying too close to the sun, his waxen wings melt and he plummets into the sea. The Icarus Paradox reveals where the machine is deified and yet under suspicion, where even the simplest technology can bring humanity amongst the gods, but as such, it is an extension of our own frailty and capriciousness.  

Artist Glenn Arthur uses his signature élan to create a steampunk masterpiece. His triptych of aeronautic heroines reveals libidinal panache and fearless determination—a portrait of sensitivity, strength, and resolve.

Brian Giberson’s fantastic digital works explore the retro-futuristic narrative with crypto-entomology and anachronistic propaganda in stunning detail and imagination.  Found objects and skilled metal work enhance his pieces, making them uniquely original wonders.

Ted von Heiland’s mixed media pieces explore the tender relationship between technology and humanity.  Intimate and arresting, his works betray the bond with emotion and subtle power.

Southern California artist Travis Raymond’s illustrative narrative revolves around the startlingly alluring relationship between beauty and violence.  Unflinching in his treatment of the subject, he uses mixed media to achieve a sense of deadly glamour and cruel serenity.

Renowned Japanese glass artist Hiromi Takizawa joins us with her signature Fly Away balloon series.  Drawing from powerful childhood memories, she transforms sand and fire into a striking installation of whimsy and playful nostalgia.
