Sept. 1, 2010 - PRLog -- Mahon, also known as Mao, has been the capital of Menorca since the British moved it from Ciutadella. It was on the west coast of the Island and Ciutadella used to be the capital of Menorca, but it was changed because of Mahon's harbour. At 5 km long, over 1 km wide at its widest point and 15-30m deep, Mahon's harbour is one of the largest natural harbours in the world. Also add the fact that its location in the Mediterranean has made it a strategic stronghold for many nations throughout history, although this is also the reason why it has been targeted by foreign invasions in the past.  The city on the east coast has just under 30,000 inhabitants, and is a traditional holiday destination for thousands every single year. Menorca is a quieter Island than Ibiza - known for its non-stop party atmosphere - and Mahon is one of the most sought after destinations in the Mediterranean thanks to some of the finest tranquil beaches and Menorca villas.

The city is known for its many historical buildings, with the oldest being the Arch de San Roque, the only remains of the great wall which used to encircle the city.  This shows the element of the city that was a testament to its part in having a strategic past in military activity.  Down the road from the Arch de San Rogue is the Town hall which embodies the essence of Menorca.  Built in 1631 and then restored in 1780, the hall has a clock that was given to the Menorcan's by an English Governor named Richard Kane, and inside the town hall is a gallery that holds paintings of Menorcans that are considered some of the finest in the land.

Also in the town's square is the Church of Santa Maria which was rebuilt in between 1748 and 1772 and is home to a great organ with over 3000 pipes. Near the church is the Plaza de la Conquesta, in the centre of this is a monument that has been erected to the memory of King Alfonso III. He was a man who conquered Menorca from the Muslims in 1287. Also in the square is the Public Library that is housed in an 18th century mansion known as the Casa de Cultura.

The town has loads to offers for visitors. Shopping can be found along pedestrian streets with a wide assortment of shops, swish boutiques, leather, pottery and fresh fish and food in the markets.  The town's market is now held in a building that was originally a convent, built in 1751 which has been beautifully restored lately and is also the venue for musical events throughout the year. Built underground beneath the market building is a large Spar supermarket which is well stocked and very competitive price wise so you can stock up and save yourself money which can be spent on better things, such as gifts. Mahon is also a great place where you can sample some Menorca's best restaurants and cafés, making it just another great reason to visit this city.
