Aug. 22, 2010 - PRLog -- Once thought of as a ‘hippy town’, Byron Bay and surrounding areas are becoming more and more expensive. The boom of the 80s has not stopped erupting.

According to the Housing Industry Association (HIA) 2006 census data, 63 per cent of people living in the Byron Bay Council area are paying more than 30 per cent of gross income on rent, while 42.6 per cent are hit by the burden of mortgages.

And it’s not just housing. “It’s more expensive to eat here than in London. I couldn’t believe the price of a cup of coffee.” said Tom who was visiting from the UK.

And our pockets are not the only thing at risk, buildings use 40% of total energy consumed*, 12.2% of the total amount of water consumed per day* and 40% of Australian waste is building waste*. These facts were recently launched in a 107 page manual.

With opportunities for sustainable and ecological growth, not for profit organizations such as Transition Towns are becoming more and more popular.

Other alternatives such as Hemp Building promise to ‘build for as cheap or cheaper than brick veneer’. And such novel solutions also promise to deliver on living costs with excellent insulation, rodent and fire proof capabilities. “We are not only trying to solve the sustainability issue, but the affordable issue by empowering those wanting to build for less.” Comments Paul Benhaim of the hemp builders.

Affordability and sustainability are now the link and maybe the key is in the old green crop that has been used for paper, fuel, plastic and now it seems, for building.
As the developers continue to tighten their purse strings and legislators continue to shy away from industrial hemp, will the green option make an impact? If we consider the recent election results, the Green Party now being the 3rd largest political party in Australia, hemp may have a chance.
