By: Sophia McKay DJ Currency Aundre Perkins was born on February 4th, 1989 to parents Nadine McKay and Dennis Perkins. He grew up in the communities of Sterling Castle and Padmore in Red Hills, St. Andrew where both his parents lived. Aundre attended the Swallowfield All Age and Hydel High schools respectively before moving on to Huttons Education Unit. During his tenure at high school, Aundre’s love for football lead him to pursue a career in the sport but his hopes were dashed when old injuries to his right knee which left him hospitalized for over a week at age six resurfaced and financial difficulties set in on both parents as well as his coach. Aundre grew up listening to different genres Hip-Hop, R&B, Reggae and Dancehall but it was not until his aunt became involved in the music business, that he got a first hand view of the business aspect of it and had a better understanding of how he could pursue a career in this business. His aunt, who was employed to one of the leading music companies in the island, resigned her position at that company and started her own business, operating from her home office in Red Hills, St. Andrew. Having access to a computer should have been his greatest opportunity at the time but Aundre’s aunt was always working on her computer and stayed up late at nights doing her work. However, disappointing this might have been for him because he had to wait until she retires for bed before he got a chance to practice his craft, it created the opportunity he wanted to hone his skills. And so in the wee hours of the morning, strapped with his earphones in order to not disturb the rest of the household, Aundre practiced. He became very flexible using the computer as it provided golden opportunities for him he was now able to download software, taught himself how to mix and exude keen interest in production. He also found the many different websites that provided free music downloads and it was here that he started his music collection. It was time for him to test his skills his friends who knew of his interest in music production and selecting supported him, they are his biggest fans so they decided to build a studio and a sound system of which they would call “Young Money”. This was how he got his alias name, one of his friends, up and coming Dancehall/Reggae artiste Bitta, thought it fitting for him to be called “DJ CURRENCY” as he would be at the helm of Young Money Sound. Now official, DJ Currency was introduced to Fire Bomb Sound where he started playing in and around his community. He quickly became a ‘person of interest’ to many who saw the passion he puts into selecting, his uniqueness and exciting performance that had the girls gyrating and the men and boys saluting, within a few months DJ Currency established a growing fan base. By this time his aunt had taken her business away from home and open an office in the city, of course DJ Currency stuck with her. There he had adequate space, unlimited time and access to a vacant computer. For two years he spent his time networking and building his catalog while working towards obtaining certification in production. Working with his aunt has provided publicity for him as well and allowed him to get acquainted with a number of artistes which kept him up to date with the latest music. DJ Currency is ready to showcase his talent to the world and stake his name among the top producers and disc jocks in the business. # # # NEW IMAGE PROMOTIONS is designed to help Reggae and Dancehall artistes gather press coverage, build an audience and market their music until they generate grass root excitement.
