Durham Comes Alive in Vintage Postcards

New book showcases history of this quintessential New England town

Aug. 10, 2010 - PRLog -- Settled in 1699, Durham has a vast and exceptional history.  During the postcard era, images of historic homes, celebrations, businesses and other areas of interest in town were sent all across the state and country and brought a little piece of Durham to the recipient.

Spearheaded by President Sarah Atwell, the Durham Historical Society has published a new book that captures early 20th century life in Durham and illustrates the many changes and transitions that have made Durham what it is today.

Highlights of Durham: 1900-1950:
•Features vintage postcards from the Durham Historical Society and private collections
•Provides both a history of the postcard and information on local residents of all centuries
•Details the 20th century traditions that are no longer in existence today
•Shows Durham when it was primarily a farming community

Proceeds from the sale of the book will go to the Durham Historical Society and will be used to continue the restoration of the Center Schoolhouse that was built in 1775.
