Some Chicago Pet Shops To Feel The Heat During The Dog Days Of August!

Aug. 4, 2010 - PRLog -- Chicago, IL – The Puppy Mill Project is turning up the heat on targeted pet shops in Chicago that sell puppies.  According to Cari Meyers, founder of the organization, “The purpose of the protests is to educate the public about the connection between pet shops that sell puppies and puppy mills.”

Many people are unaware of the connection between puppy mills and the pet stores that sell puppies. This is in spite of the attention given to puppy mills by the media and mega celebrities such as Oprah Winfrey.
 
Meyers believes,  “Lots of consumers make false assumptions about the quality of the puppies at pet stores because the parents of the puppies are AKC registered and the commercial breeders of the puppies are USDA inspected. It is not uncommon for pet store to  also claim puppies come from good reputable breeders. The truth is these puppies come from Canine Hell!”

Most experts agree with Meyers about the incorrect assumptions many consumers make when they buy a puppy from a pet store.

On  its own web site (http://www.akc.org/reg/about.cfm) the AKC states “it cannot guarantee the quality or health of dogs in its registry.”  

Another truth is the USDA is woefully understaffed and fails to meet its obligations when it comes to inspecting commercial dog breeders.

Lastly, no reputable breeder who loves his/her dogs will ship puppies at four weeks of age to retailers who will sell the product with no concern about what kind of home the buyer is going to give it.

The AKC registration of the parents of the puppies and the resulting false impression of quality that  purebred registration creates enables pet stores to charge $1,000 and more for puppies.  If the same dogs were not from registered parents it is unlikely buyers would pay $1,000 or more per puppy.

The Puppy Mill Project recommends that instead of purchasing a puppy from a pet store the buyer should consider animal shelters, breed rescue organizations, and reputable breeders as sources.
