July 29, 2010 - PRLog -- Jimmy Slyde was born in Atlanta Georgia but raised in Boston Massachusetts.  It was at The New England Conservatory of Music at the age of 12 that he began tap dancing with Stanley Brown. Later he form a duo with a fellow student by the name of Jimmy “Sir Slyde” Mitchell and together they would be called “The Slyde Brothers” In the late 1940 and 1950’s Slyde would tour with big bands in different clubs all through the US. Slyde also performed with such musicians as Duke Ellington and Count Basie. Slyde moved to Paris when jobs became scarce in the United States but he then returned back in the 1980s to perform in television specials and to dance in films like “Round Midnight” and the “Cotton Club” He also recieved a Tony Award nomination for his debut on Broadway in a musical called “Black and Blue”.  With the help of Steve Condos, He developed a program at the Smithsonian Institution. The program was of jazz tap improvisation. James Slyde went on to recieve numerous honors including a Guggenheim Fellowship for Choreography in 2003 , the Charles “Honi” Coles award, an honorary Doctorate of Performing Art from Oklahoma City University and others. Late in his life, Slyde continued performing as well as teaching throughout the US. On May 16th, 2008, it was announced that a legend had passed. James “Jimmy Slyde” Titus Godbolt. Jimmy Slyde was a mentor and supporter of Hot Stepz magazine and before his untimely death he waqs working on a stage show about the legacy of Black dance in America co- authored by Boston Globe Columnist and Boston /Bay State Banner  Editor Kay Bourne.
