16th Annual Studio Showcase!

Aug. 12, 2010 - PRLog -- 2010 marks the 16th year that Studio Showcase has offered unique handmade art in an intimate home setting to Indianapolis area fine art and craft lovers. For more information, visit http://www.studioshowcaseart.com/.

Studio Showcase began in 1994 when a group of central Indiana weavers joined together for a show and sale of their work. This evolved into an annual event. Since then, other artists from a variety of media have joined the co-op. Studio Showcase has maintained the warmth and charm of the original show, where a group of artists work together to present their newest creations in an open-house setting.

Still secret to some, Studio Showcase gives its visitors a warm and welcoming shopping experience. The show's success is attributed to its growing list of shoppers who not only return each year but also bring their friends.

New artists are juried in to Studio Showcase each year, keeping the show fresh and new. Artists interested in participating in the next jury process should contact the jury coordinator, Eleanor Broaded, at ebroaded@comcast.net.

Studio Showcase occurs each October in an inviting home-gallery setting located at 5914 Stafford Way on Indianapolis' northwest side.

Spotlight on Two Studio Showcase Artists

Jennifer Shirley and Clay Foster both grew up making things, tinkering with wood scraps and creating with what they found.

Jennifer grew up in Indianapolis, and with a degree in Telecommunications, currently works in the television industry. Her personal creativity shines when she uses a lathe to create beautifully-turned wooden bowls and sculptures. Jennifer creates her own wood-burning tools to apply the intricate detail seen in her work as the patterns, textures and even music that tell stories from her life.

Jennifer says, "Making things has become more of a necessity than a simple pleasure. When I go for long periods of time without making, I feel a sense of disconnection with something that keeps me grounded and in a place where I can be the best person I can be to my family, my friends and myself. It just makes everything better."

Clay grew up in Austin, Texas, and learned his fine craftsmanship from his father. After a degree in weaving and fabric design, he returned to his love of wood and furniture construction, and his expertise as a woodworker has taken him all over the world to learn and teach.

It was at such a teaching opportunity at the Marc Adams School of Woodworking in Franklin, Indiana, that he met Jennifer, who was working as his class assistant. They found that they shared more than just a love of woodworking. Clay moved to Indianapolis to join Jennifer and her woodworking studio, which they have filled with a myriad of woodworking tools and original cabinetry.

Studio Showcase is a co-op of more than 30 central Indiana artisans whose work includes textiles, jewelry, ceramics, photography, painting, glass, wood and more. Once a year, these artists gather to produce a three-day event to showcase their new work in a on-of-a-kind home sale setting.
