July 13, 2010 - PRLog -- Who said postcards are something from the past? With over 4.5 million postcards exchanged to date, the Postcrossing Project is boldly proving it different.

Created in July 2005, the Postcrossing Project is celebrating its 5th year of making the world a happier place - and that's literal by the way! Every day thousands of Postcrossing postcards are received around the world sparking smiles to those who find them in their mailbox. And what's best: the project is completely free.

The project is fueling a global postcard revolution connecting over 200 countries in a single platform with nearly 200.000 enthusiastic users who just can't get enough postcards. By breaking boundaries such as country borders, age, gender, political and even religious beliefs, Postcrossing is providing global awareness of other cultures and different ways of seeing the world to those who participate in it.

In this day and age when technology is not just present, but it's perhaps becoming too present, Postcrossing brings back the joy of traditional mail. It reminds us that nothing beats the intimacy of a postcard that traveled the world before the local postman dropped it in our mailbox.

The project is really simple to use, which also contributes to explain its success: one only has to send postcards to receive postcards back from random people somewhere in the world. After creating an account at http://www.postcrossing.com, the member requests addresses to send postcards to - each address comes with a code (Postcard-ID) that uniquely identifies that postcard in the system. When those postcards arrive, their receivers register them and the sender is then selected to receive postcards as well.

It's the thrill of getting a surprise in the mailbox that keeps its users happily addicted to the project: a postcard that was especially written for them, coming from anywhere in the world. The Postcrossing community has extended the "offline" side of the project, by organizing meetups that take place in several different cities in the world. There are plenty of stories of friendships created across different countries and continents and even a few couples who met each other through Postcrossing.

On the date of its 5th birthday, Postcrossing is sending out a strong message that mail is not dead - it will continue to connect the world into a happier place, one postcard at a time.
