PHOENIX STONE: With the release of "Proud To Be (Born Again American)," Phoenix Stone emerges as a country singer/songwriter of real power and substance, adding yet another page to a long and varied list of career accomplishments. Produced by James Stroud, "Proud To Be (Born Again American)" is the first single from Phoenix's new album-in-progress. Written by Stone with co-lyricist Brent Miller, it is a call to action in a troubled time, reflecting Stone’s own thoughtful patriotism. "This is a song I’ve lived,” he says simply. “It embodies everything I believe in.” Stone’s version of the American dream took root in a working-class family with more than its share of military veterans. He grew up in Florida listening to country music, with artists like Conway Twitty, Hank Williams Jr. and Ronnie Milsap helping to shape his taste. “Music was the thing that was always there for me, through the good and bad,” he says. “I knew from an early age that it would play a big part in my future.” Influenced by rock as well as country, he played music in school, performed in bands as a teenager, and earned a part on a Nickelodeon series. He then made plans to study music seriously. “It was always very important to my mom that I go to college,” he says, “because she and my dad never had the opportunity.” “I went up and down Music Row,” he says, “but couldn’t even get a meeting with the labels. I would have given anything to get a meeting with James Stroud, but now that we are working together, I understand that everything happens when the time is right.” Stone made his first real splash as a producer, working with acts including the Backstreet boys and Art Garfunkel. His talent as an artist finally led him to a deal and an album release on Universal Records. Still, he says, “The only thing I ever wanted to do was to make country records, and when I came across Brent Miller, I got the opportunity."
