June 18, 2010 - PRLog -- The Illinois Department of Public Health, along with local health departments across the state are investigating in order to determine the cause of the salmonella contamination.

So far, 14 counties are involved in this outbreak.  Those who were sickened have eaten at Subway Restaurants at Bureau, Christian, Cass, Champaign, Fulton, LaSalle, Macon, Ogle, Peoria, Sangamon, Schuyler, Shelby, Tazewell and Warren county locations.  It appears that no illnesses have been reported in the northeastern and southernmost portions of the state.  Victims range between the ages of 6 and 88 years old.

This salmonella outbreak involves an unusual serotype known as Hvittingfoss, which normally is only seen in one or two cases each year in Illinois.

On June 3rd, the Illinois Department of Public Health issued a press release concerning the investigation of the illnesses across these 14 counties.  This press release states that the restaurant has withdrawn all green peppers, red onion, lettuce and tomatoes from the dates that were suspect when victims became ill, and replaced it with fresh produce.  According to the press release, Subway has been cooperating in the investigation so far.

Salmonella food poisoning (http://www.esalmonellafoodpoisoning.com/) usually causes only mild symptoms in healthy adults, such as diarrhea, abdominal pain, nausea and vomiting.  In some instances, it can be very serious.  Young children, the elderly and those with a compromised immune system may be at an increased risk of developing serious complications.

If you or a loved one have eaten at a Subway location and develop symptoms, seek medical advice from your doctor.  You may also contact a New York food poisoning attorney (http://www.brownchiari.com/), who will advise you of any rights you may have regarding costs associated with salmonella food poisoning.
