June 15, 2010 - PRLog -- Breaking Glass Pictures’ QC Cinema label will give a shot in the arm to the often overlooked lesbian romance genre with the August 31 DVD release of “The Final Girl.”  The film is notable not only for its all-female cast of characters, but also for its uniquely grisly portrait of Paris.

Set in the forgotten side streets, apartments and hotel rooms of the French capital, the sultry mystery follows three women whose paths converge around a vanished fourth named Leena.  There’s Leena’s former renter, the sex worker who now occupies her room, and a spurned, older lover.  Each woman seems caught in an emotional state of suspended animation as they all struggle to understand exactly what happened to the elusive woman who has brought them together.

“The Final Girl” is an eerie and captivating journey through the psyches of lost women whose momentary glances and subtle gestures reveal more about them than the words they speak. Combining raw documentary footage of the city streets, cryptic dialogue, and atmospheric music, Verow seduces viewers, leaving them just as intrigued by the enigma of Leena as the film’s main characters.  Like the best films of David Lynch or the French New Wave, Verow’s nightmarish vision lingers long after the credits roll.

Fans of Verow will be surprised at how he expertly handles the films tangled web of lesbian romances with such a high level of artistry, complexity, and eroticism (this is the queer directors first foray into lesbian romance).  The women of “The Final Girl” are by no means tortured souls confused by their sexualities – rather, they are independent and disillusioned women searching for intimacy in a city whose usual romantic façade appears unusually glum.  “The Final Girl” is a must-view for fans of queer cinema and those looking for a rare glimpse of Paris’ grungier side.
