The Rollback is Back (at Wal-Mart)

Walmart has saved this planet hundreds of billions of dollars since its founding. But, the price rollback being announced this month will likely save this country about $10 billion during the balance of 2010 alone.

Walmart was far from the first retailer to roll back prices, but it was, and still is, the best.

While every retailer in the land wants customers to receive superior value for what they spend, and most create sales and specials to emphasize that value, Walmart’s every day low prices and “Save money. Live better.” positioning has made it the largest retailer (and corporation) in the world.

However, among Walmart’s many executions, the price rollback is the very best.  The U.S. retail industry has been very innovative in promoting low prices over the years, from Blue Light Specials to truckload sales, but none has been more effective than Walmart’s price rollback.

According to Gary Stibel, Founder & CEO of the Westport, CT-based New England Consulting Group, Walmart has saved this planet hundreds of billions of dollars since its founding.  But, the price rollback being announced this month will likely save this country about $10 billion during the balance of 2010 alone.

Tom Muccio, Managing Partner & Principal of the New England Consulting Group and founder of the now famous P&G Walmart team, states that “Walmart has acquired millions of new customers in the U.S. since the recession began two years ago, and this rollback is one of several initiatives being taken to be sure they retain as many of these new customers as possible”.

Says Stibel, “Walmart resisted pressure and temptation over the years to take actions that would have increased their costs and made such rollbacks infeasible, but they stuck to their knitting and customers and employees (associates) all benefited as a result.”
