June 3, 2010 - PRLog -- Following an expected cut in license fees by the regulator, the Communications Commission of Kenya (CCK), Zain plans to roll out its 3G services by next month as put it the operator’s Managing Director Rene Meza : “We are planning to roll out 3G services in July 2010. We expect the regulator to announce new spectrum costs for 3G during the first week of June which are going to be substantially lower than the current $25 million“.

It is important to recall here that Safaricom which is currently the only licensed 3G operator paid $25 million in 2007 to be granted its licence and since then has managed to attract about 2 million users according to Dataxis Intelligence estimates, and boosted its data segment revenue by 72% in the year to March 2010.

This 3G success story by Safaricom is an evidence for the other operators – Zain, Telkom Kenya and Yu- that together hold only just over 21% of the mobile market share, that Data is the main growth area in the next coming years though half of the country’s population is still without a mobile phone connection.
