June 1, 2010 - PRLog -- Delhi University admissions may finally go online from next year. As part of the ongoing Student Life Cycle Automation Project, DU is planning to make it possible for students to submit their forms from home at the click of a mouse. DU vice-chancellor, professor Deepak Pental, on Tuesday said that the university had already given a contract to a software giant for computerizing the various procedures a student has to go through in the university.

The submission of forms should be made online. We will try and do it from next year. We are not sure if it would happen in 2011 or 2012 but it has to eventually happen,’’ said Pental. Though Pental’s term ends this August, he said that the automation project had already started for putting the examination system in place and the admission process will also be taken up later. ‘‘A total of Rs 1,300 crore has been invested in the development of the university and it will show in due time. Wipro has been roped in to manage the online forms and to update the lifecycle of the students. The face of the University is going to change in the next five years.

All over the world, universities have an online system of admission. We have great IT-based services available in our country so why can’t we make the submission of forms online too?’’ DU officials had so far shied away from the introducing online forms citing the large volume of applications received by the varsity every year. While last year, DU had received around 92,000 forms, the admission procedure this year is still on with DU already having given out over 1 lakh forms.

However, Pental dismissed it by saying that the volume of applications cannot be a hindrance. ‘‘As compared to the billions of financial records maintained online in the country, the number of forms received by the university is close to nothing. It’s just that people in the university should be ready to work on it,’’ he added. Pental was speaking at an interaction with students organized by BJP leader Vijay Goel’s organization Lok Abhiyan on Tuesday. He said that the university is working at providing exam results online to the students to avoid any delay like every year. He also informed that in the new system, each student in the university will be given a smart card and a unique identification number using which they can check the results online. The marksheets will also be mailed in time.

Deepak Dutt, a first-year student of BA (honours) political science welcomed the idea. ‘‘Lakhs of students apply in DU every year that leads to long queues at the counters. It will be a good idea to make the process online especially in this Delhi heat.
