Web Marketing Strategies for small business:

Marketing your business online is entirely different than how you’d go about marketing your business in the real world. For most online businesses, the thousands of dollars that it would take to run an effective campaign (in one city alone!) would never generate enough web traffic to make it worth the expense.

Instead, people looking to market their websites have to resort to newer techniques. On the one hand, marketing your business online is far cheaper than the real world counterpart. On the other hand, it can take a lot of time to really build an effective web marketing strategy. Below are some ideas on how to start on the path to becoming an Internet marketing guru. Not all of the ideas will work for everyone, so pick and choose what would work best for your company.

To start, make sure your website looks legitimate. It may seem like an odd thing to point out, but people probably won’t be comfortable making purchases and entering in their credit card information at a website that looks like it was put together by a fifth grade student as an extra credit assignment for a computer class. It may cost a decent amount of money, but having a quality website speaks volumes to people who have nothing else to go by when they judge your business.
Setting up accounts at social sites like: Digg.com, Reddit, and Stumble. Maybe learn about a blogging, or upload videos on youtube. Think of these as networking tools, similar to business networking meetings but without having to wake up and go to a room with a bunch of assholes!  If persistent, you’ll find that over time more and more people will visit your website. If you’ve followed my previous tip and built a decent site with a good design, some of these people will make purchases.

Consider starting a Myspace and Facebook account in the name of your business and start accumulating as many friends as you possibly can. Unlike a regular storefront, which has a restricted customer base as a result of geographic limitations, your online business is only a few clicks away from everyone, even people living in other countries.

Once a week or so, put out bulletins or post notes that will remind people that you (and your business!) exist. Include coupons, and track how many new customers you gain from each social networking site. Check your pages frequently for messages and friend requests. It’s important to stay fresh and make regular changes to your pages, staying current with trends will keep you from falling into the dreaded “uncool” territory.

During the time it takes you to do all of this, make sure you collect e-mail addresses like crazy. When you’ve compiled a fairly large list, start sending out newsletters. Make sure you tailor them to your audience, and position yourself as an expert in whatever industry your business happens to fall into. Offer advice, how-to tips and coupons to make the newsletter valuable to those who receive it. Otherwise, you’re just sending out spam that will end up annoying and turning off potential customers.

Depending on how much money you have left to market your business, you may want to look into advertising on sites that your customer demographic visits. There are a ton of companies that will help you to design an effective ad, and buying space on a website is generally far less expensive than buying time on the TV or radio. Hiring a search engine optimization company (SEO) to revamp your web content will help your site appear higher on search engine results pages.

If you follow these suggestions and stick with it, eventually you’ll see an increase in web traffic. To keep your customers coming back, remember to treat all of them as you would in the real world: with gratitude and respect. It may be a slow and rather tedious process, but the juice is usually worth the squeeze.

Being business savvy will only get you so far; to really succeed you have to stay up to date with search engines, social sites, and software to manipulate it all.  Fortunately, it’s not as difficult as it may seem.

If you want to submit your business to listing's across the web (Google maps, City Search, etc..)   go to http://www.googrilla.com/business-listing-submission.php and fill out the form. This is available in Canada & the U.S. for registered business owners.
