Military Archbishop to Visit Nebraska Memorial Day Weekend

LINCOLN, NE – Roman Catholic Military Archbishop Timothy Broglio, a former Vatican Ambassador, will arrive in Nebraska over Memorial Day Weekend to preach the Mass for newly ordained Nebraska Army National Guard Chaplain candidate Fr. Steve Thomlison on Sunday, May 30th, at 11:30AM, at the St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church on the UNL Campus at 320 North 16th Street. Service and family members of the Nebraska Army and Air National Guard have been invited.

   Also participating in the Sunday activities will be the Honorable Jeff Fortenberry, Congressman from Nebraska’s First District, Nebraska Lt. Governor Rick Sheehy, Brigadier General Judd Lyons, Adjutant General of the Nebraska National Guard, Chaplain (Colonel) Rod Armon, State National Guard Chaplain, and Command Sergeant Major Eli Valenzuela, senior Enlisted Advisor of the Nebraska Army National Guard.

   Pope Benedict XVI named Broglio head of the Archdiocese for the Military Services, USA on November 19, 2007. The Archdiocese for the Military Services provides pastoral care for more than 1.5 million Catholic men, women, and their families in the U.S. Military assigned to 220 installations in 29 countries, the US Military Academies, employees of the Federal Government in service outside of the borders of the USA and patients and staff at 153 VA hospitals in the United States and her territories. Archbishop Broglio is the former Nuncio (Vatican Ambassador) to the Dominican Republic, as well as to Puerto Rico. He was a senior American cleric in Rome while serving as the Chief of Staff to the Vatican Secretary of State. This will be Archbishop Broglio’s first visit to Nebraska.

   Fr. Steve Thomlison will be ordained as a Roman Catholic Priest at the Cathedral of the Risen Christ on Saturday, May 29th at 11:00AM by Lincoln Bishop Fabian Bruskewitz. After his ordination, 1LT Steve Thomlison will serve as an Army National Guard Chaplain and as an assistant pastor for a parish in the Lincoln Diocese.  Prior to seminary, Thomlison served 15 years as a civilian political advisor to Nebraska, national, and international political leaders.
