May 17, 2010 - PRLog -- The J.C. Coleman Foundation, Inc. works in partnership with the John S. Delaware Recreation Center in hosting an after-school program to approximately 25 children.  The mission of the Foundation is to  improve academic achievement and the attitude toward academics of at-risk children through a variety of creative, innovative, non-traditional, and collaborative support services.  The J.C. Coleman Foundation wants to improve the community through education and through enriching young lives.  The ultimate vision is to improve the graduation rate of at-risk youth in Chatham County and see these young people become responsible members of our community.  The goal is to get the kids off the street corners and away from bad influences and to have them realize that their past does not have to dictate their future experiences.

After tutors finish helping each child with homework in the after-school program, they teach an enrichment lesson in areas such as current events, literacy, media appreciation, arts and crafts, and sports and recreation.  After averaging second and third quarter grades and comparing them to first quarter grades, the results were staggering:  67% improvement in math and writing, 69% in reading, and 73% in language arts.  Additionally, 67% of the after-school participants turned in their homework  regularly , and 67% did not have conduct issues at school.  With only 15% reading below grade level, the program is really showing results.  The hard work of the tutors paid off.

The J.C. Coleman/Delaware after-school program is a huge success.  Careful planning and implementation is the key.  Research shows that 86% of children do not have access to the benefits of after-school care.  The fortunate ones can be found at the Delaware Center hosted by The J.C. Coleman Foundation, Inc.
