Coleman Foundation, Inc./Delaware After School ProgramAfter months of hard work tutoring and offering enrichment activities, the after-school tutors witnessed remarkable improvement of between 67-73% in the second and third quarter grades from the first quarter grades in their students’ core courses:

After tutors finish helping each child with homework in the after-school program, they teach an enrichment lesson in areas such as current events, literacy, media appreciation, arts and crafts, and sports and recreation. After averaging second and third quarter grades and comparing them to first quarter grades, the results were staggering: 67% improvement in math and writing, 69% in reading, and 73% in language arts. Additionally, 67% of the after-school participants turned in their homework regularly , and 67% did not have conduct issues at school. With only 15% reading below grade level, the program is really showing results. The hard work of the tutors paid off. The J.C. Coleman/Delaware after-school program is a huge success. Careful planning and implementation is the key. Research shows that 86% of children do not have access to the benefits of after-school care.
