May 8, 2010 - PRLog -- Let’s forget all that and look at what people should or should not do if they decide to go ahead and sleep with a co-worker.

The first thing is to keep quiet about it. You don’t have to go around like it’s a state secret, but it’s almost always better to keep the details of extracurricular activities to yourself. This is because it might negatively affect how your boss, or your co-workers boss views you and your judgment. Also as a general rule its best to try to avoid being the subject of gossip and rumor.

After that the rules are pretty simple, beginning with treating whoever you are sleeping with professionally while at work. This applies whether it was a onetime deal or a regular occurrence and whether things went well or ended badly. Anything else could lead to accusations and recriminations for both of you. Also, it’s generally not a good idea to sleep with someone who is your boss or vice-versa. Unless the two of you wind up married, or in a similar type of arrangement, things will go very bad eventually. They might even if things don’t go bad, because others might see unfair advantages given.

If you do choose to sleep with someone, it is almost always a better thing if the two of you are in completely separate groups, preferably in different buildings. If you’re going to sleep with a co-worker you need to know that not all of the rules are the same for men and women. Men tend to get pats on the back for sleeping with co-workers, while women tend to be regarded in a less favorable light.

Also, there is the issue of how you and the person you’ve slept with relate to one another. Sometimes, sleeping together is all that it’s about; other times, there is more to it and sometimes, it’s difficult to tell which is which. On the whole, it’s best to discuss things with whoever you are sleeping with in private, and to do so in a respectful manner and to do your best to figure out where you stand so that things won’t come up while at work.

A final rule of thumb is to never sleep with a co-worker if either of you is married. It’s a bad idea for those not working in the same place, and a worse idea for those who are. In all likelihood, doing so will result in serious negative repercussions both personal and professional.
