World MEMS Players, 2010 Edition

For each company, Yole Développement presents business models, products and manufacturing data such as wafer size, substrates, production capacity, etc.

After an economic downturn in 2009 impacting many micro-technology companies, the MEMS industry is experiencing a restructuring. Several mergers and acquisitions occurred like Bosch acquiring Akustica for MEMS Silicon Microphone or Infineon selling its FBAR asset to Avago Technologies. The various types of MEMS companies, classified by business models, are evolving differently. While the numbers of MEMS OEM manufacturing Fabs have dropped and stabilized, MEMS foundries are increasing both capacity and locations due to heightened interest of Semiconductor companies like TSMC. These traditional IC players are looking for diversification to ramp-up production capacities and their know-how may have a direct impact on time to market, leading to strong interest from Fabless players. Invensense and Kionix, for example, recorded robust growth during the recent downturn.

This activity is leading to significant interest in MEMS players and their business.
