March 24, 2010 - PRLog -- It’s fitting that one of the most biodiverse areas on the planet, Costa Rica, should also have the distinction of having an island that is known as the center of biodiversity in the ocean. Costa Ricas Best Kept Secrets - Part 4 takes us to Cocos Island, 320 miles off the Pacific coast of Costa Rica.

If you’re a diver, you have probably heard of Cocos. As Jacques-Yves Cousteau called it “The most beautiful island on Earth.”

National Geographic just finished shooting a special in Cocos and said this, “Cocos is legendary for its schools of hammerheads, and also its white tip reef sharks, whale sharks, dolphins, tuna, marlin, turtles, and manta rays. The rising seawater, cold and nutrient-rich, helps creatures flourish off Cocos’ shores. Teeming with large marine predators, many “pelagic” or migratory, Cocos is the Serengeti of the sea.”

Above water, Cocos is shrouded in mystery, rain forest and cloud forest, a myriad of waterfalls, alive with endemic creatures. Even if you’ve never worn  a pair of fins, or ever snorkeled in your life, you may already know of this lush volcanic island.

Isolation, and high cost of travel, keeps Cocos Island off most tourists lists but this magical place can be visited. Go where few others on the planet have ever been before.
