Swing Dance Craze Still Strong in Atlanta

March 18, 2010 - PRLog -- Most most young people today think of swing dancing and think of movies like Swingers, Swing Kids, or the '90's Gap commercial. Main stream media such as this this helped jump start the swing revival in the 1990's, but the swing dance community has been growing strong even since.

The dance is not only growing in its core followers, but its going back to its roots. People are studying the old clips, learning from the old dancers, and not just swing dancing. There doing the Lindy Hop.

In Atlanta you can find swing dancing three to four nights a week and if you include classes, you could be doing those crazy steps every single day of the week according to Swing ATL, Atlanta's Swing Dance and Lindy Hop Calendar.

The calendar lists are so full its no wonder how this becomes an almost religious experience for its followers. And in many ways it is. For many people in the scene it is their primary source of community. In Atlanta, many of those who have been dancing since the turn of the century have also met their husbands and wives though dancing, yet still come out to socialize and stay in shape.

And its not just the scene in Atlanta that has been growing. This underground community has been growing all over the world with scenes in all across Europe, Australia, and places you wouldn't suspect such as Mumbai, Singapore, Seoul, and Buenos Aires. In March Atlanta will host dancers from all across the U.S. as well as some of these other countries at their annual Lindy Hop exchange, ATLX. To make the weekend affordable for their fellow dancers, the Atlanta scene will put these people from other world cities up in their own homes and spend almost the entire weekend social dancing.
