Founding Member of Women Strike for Peace Amy Swerdlow to Lecture at Adelphi University

March 10, 2010 - PRLog -- Adelphi University is pleased to welcome Amy Swerdlow, renowned historian, activist, and founding member of the peace activist group Women Strike for Peace (WSP). She will deliver a lecture, “To End the Arms Race—Not the Human Race: Women Strike for Peace in the 1960s,” about her instrumental role as a founding member of the ground-breaking organization WSP, on Monday, March 22, 2010, at 7:00 p.m. in the Thomas Dixon Lovely Ballroom of the Ruth S. Harley University Center, 1 South Avenue, Garden City, NY. The event is sponsored by the History Department and the Gender Studies Program and is free and open to the public.

Currently working on a political memoir, Growing up Red: the Personal Was Always Political, Dr. Swerdlow is the author of Women Strike for Peace: Traditional Motherhood and Radical Politics in the 1960s, and numerous articles and essays for feminist publications. She began her career in publishing and has been a member of the board of directors of the Feminist Press, an independent nonprofit literary publisher that promotes freedom of expression and social justice, since 1973.

Inspired by her mentor Dr. Gerda Lerner, Dr. Swerdlow has been director emerita of the Women’s Studies program created by Dr. Lerner at Sarah Lawrence College. She previously taught Women’s and American history at Sarah Lawrence, beginning in 1981. She served as a delegate to the National Women’s Conference in 1977 and director of the American Historical Association’s Institute for Women’s History in Secondary Schools.
