PRLog -- Sony announced plans to launch 3D TVs in June. The company expects a model with a 46inch screen to sell for $3,875 including two pairs of 3D glasses, a 52% premium over its latest regular LCD TV with a comparable screen size. The Japanese TV maker expects this new move to boost its diverse business operations that range from TVs, digital cameras to video games and Blu-Ray DVD players. In addition, the company also plans to release 3D game software around June in time for TV launch. Yoshihisa Ishida, Sony’s Senior Vice President, said: “We at Sony will liberate 3D from the confines of movie theatres and make it something that people can enjoy at home”.
The launch of Sony’s 3D TVs will put the company in direct competition with Samsung that has already launched its 3D TVs in South Korea and plans to launch them globally this month with the aim of selling at least 2 million units in 2010 reports Reuters. Sony is also competing with LG for the position as the world’s No 2 flat TV maker.
Panasonic Corp, currently in fourth place, will launch its 3D TVs in the USA on Wednesday and says it will cooperate with Best Buy, top US electronics retailer, in promoting them.
