RFID hype never lives up  to its expectations. With a projected market of USD 26 billion in 2016 it was still struggling at just above USD 5 billion in 2009. There are several reasons why RFID projects have not taken off. One of the main reasons is obviously the cost.

Any RFID project cost can be split into three main components – hardware, software and consultancy. While there is little System Integrators can do to reduce Hardware costs, Software and Consultancy costs can be reduced, at least for some applications. When you look at the breakdown, typically hardware costs amount to only 30-40% of the overall project. The remainder is Software, Customisation and Consultancy.

One strategy to reduce the overall project cost is to reduce the amount of time required to deploy RFID solutions thus reducing Consultancy charges. The idea is to package the solution into a device that can be  ‘plug and play‘. While such solutions may not work for all applications, it may still work in simpler deployments. At the very least it could work in a trial environment for concept proofing.

With this in mind, identySOL have developed such a solution using Active RFID. This solution is aimed at employee and high value asset tracking, within a building environment such as hospitals, offices, manufacturing units etc.

The solution uses wireless connected smart RFID readers and a network appliance developed by identySOL which is called SmallBox. The full solution takes less than a few hours to set up and gives basic tracking features via a browser ,so it’s a complete plug and play solution. Small Box is a true ‘out of the box’ solution and is easily and quickly configurable by the user.
