9-11 Novel Makes Nod To 1970s

His first novel was set in Chicago, 1991, as a way to say goodbye to the 80s. Now, with a novel about 9-11 and grief, goes back the 1970s.

May 24, 2010 - PRLog -- Long live the 1970s.

That's what could be said after a quick scan of Doug Shiloh's new in-progress novel "Waiting for the End."

After all, it only makes sense. Shiloh's 1993 Honda has a tape player in it, which he says puts him in a pop culture time warp. For working, he listens to 70's music from Led Zeppelin to Carpenters and Bob Dylan, as well as Gordon Lightfoot and Joni Mitchell. The main character's oldest sister, for example, is in love with Rolling Stone singer Mick Jagger. The main character is a big Beatles fan.

"At least the Honda doesn't have an 8-track player," Shiloh cracks. "I bought an iPod and now I need to load some of the research music on."

Once again, music plays a big part in Shiloh's work.

"It's something we can relate to, something that is part of our life," he adds. "You realize how pop music really changed a part of the culture, and created a generation clash."

While the 1970s play a significant part, other decades do, too: from the 1950s through current times.

"It's been fun to focus on 50 years, versus 8 months in a story line," the Illinois author adds.
