| FinSoul: U.S. Senators propose cap-and-trade legislation for power generator pollutants.Clean Air Act amendments may see sulphur and nitrogen targeted.
By: FinSoul The Clean Air Amendments Bill of 2010 hopes to introduce cap-and-trade schemes to limit the emissions of gases from coal plants, with sulphur dioxide and nitrogen oxide being of the main gasses targeted. Senator Carper believes that Mercury emissions from these plants could be cut by as much as 90%. "Mercury can contaminate our crops and water supply, ultimately harming brain function and other vital organs, and is especially harmful to children and pregnant women," FinSoul believes a Senator Alexander statement said. "Sulphur dioxide and nitrogen oxides can contribute to respiratory illness and other lung diseases." The proposed legislation would require an 80% reduction of sulphur dioxide emissions from 2008 levels and 53% for nitrous oxide, with Mercury emissions to be reduced by 90% by 2015. The bill makes provision for a trading system for sulphur dioxide and nitrous oxide emissions to be introduced, while the Environmental Protection Agency would be responsible for the regulation of Mercury emissions. The Clean Air Act was last revised in 1990 and although there have been numerous attempts by the EPA to introduce further legislation for these and other gases, FinSoul believes legal challenges have prevented them. # # # FinSoul structures and guides greenhouse gas emission reduction projects from beginning to end, working with both project developers and buyers of emission reduction credits.
