By: Jeffrey McConnell Column separation refers to the breaking of liquid columns in fully filled pipelines. Column Separation can occur during a water hammer event when pressure drops to the fluid's vapor pressure. A vapor cavity will start to grow; this cavity acts as a vacuum, retarding the liquid columns, which finally starts to diminish in size when the liquid columns change flow direction. The collision of two liquid columns can cause an instantaneous spike in pipeline pressure. This pressure spike travels through the entire pipeline and creates a severe load upon the machinery and individual pipeline. Repeating column separations may result in pipeline collapse. "While many realize column separation can occur during pump failure; this High Definition video illustrates column separation visually." States Jeffrey McConnell, Director of Marketing and Sales for Young Engineering. "Our Fuel and Oil Handling video illustrates two scenarios, column separation, and how to alleviate column separation." This video is available at http://www.youngeng.com/ "We didn’t initially feature our crude and fuel video, we received several requests to post this video online and have discovered it is one of our more popular videos viewed." States McConnell, "Educating people to the virtues of providing surge suppression is quite a task and we've found this video works extremely well." Located in San Dimas, Calif.
