OYO Restaurant & Cocktail Bar epitomises the good life. Located at the iconic V&A Hotel at the Victoria & Alfred Waterfront, OYO will delight you with a daily taste and visual extravaganza. With Table Mountain as its natural backdrop, OYO is quite literally right on the water’s edge. Couple this extraordinary setting with OYO’s delectable, contemporary, classic cuisine and you have a dining experience that’s hard to match.

Fresh local seafood is the thread running through all the menus, with fresh shucked oysters even being served on the breakfast menu. OYO’s menu is breathtaking for seafood lovers; West Coast crayfish, mussels from Saldanha, oysters from Paternoster, calamari and fresh line fish from the entire coastline are all on offer. And soon, cultivated perlemoen/abalone from Kleinmond will make their debut too.

“The freshest seafood is our focus,” says Executive Chef Sanel Esterhuyse, “and it’s all sourced locally too.” Meat eaters aren’t neglected either with Karoo lamb, venison and grain-fed beef on offer, and vegetarians have plenty to choose from too. Food is all organic and free range wherever possible and the emphasis is on fresh, simply prepared, healthy dishes. Even many of the fresh herbs used are grown personally by Sanel on the hotel’s rooftop garden.

Having worked from Plettenberg Bay to London, Cypress to Cape Town – and many countries in between – Sanel says what she loves about OYO and the V&A Hotel is that it’s still small enough to be personal. “Usually the more you progress as a chef, the less cooking you do,” she says. “Here it’s different and I just love being hands on and involved with food preparation every day.”

Authentic South African ingredients are used in all dishes and Sanel describes OYO’s style as “classic contemporary, with Mediterranean influences” – her personal favourite dish being the gorgonzola soufflé. “But the light lunches of exceptional sandwiches, pastas and salads, served on the terrace overlooking the harbour, are also memorable meals.” Alternatively, patrons can dine inside, seated on comfortable leather chairs with tables appointed in crisp white tablecloths and napery.

If its culinary comforts, the freshest seafood or decadent desserts that inspire you, or an al fresco lunch at the water’s edge followed by a cocktail at sunset, OYO offers it all. “Here we have the complete package,” says Sanel, “fine eating in a relaxed and extraordinary setting. There is no other dining experience quite like this. It is just exceptional.”
