Jan. 30, 2010 - PRLog -- Recent studies of parents show that they fear their child being introverts. Parents want their kids up and about and showing off all that they learn. Notwithstanding that all kids are different. Each of them takes time to learn different skills. Some enjoy a fast pace, while some are painstakingly slow. One of the difficulties in small children is reading.

Reading text and comprehending can be difficult for growing children. But before you get strict about it, you need to figure out the core reason. While some suffer from dyslexia, others are just lethargic, while even more are just not interested. If it is the first then you have to consult and ask for help. If they are the other two then you have to train your mind first that you need to inculcate the reading habit in your child.

Firstly explore different forms of reading – passage, poetry, novels or short-stories. Make your child read from different pages. If he has a short span of being in one place, change the topics after every passage. At the end of every reading ask him what he had read and if he understood any of it. You can get comfortable with your child with the right seating and atmosphere. Pick a cosy corner that is well lit and sit down with your child.

If understanding meanings is a hurdle, make cards with the words on it and keep it aside. After a while pick up the words and check if your child remembers the meanings of the words, if not keep it aside again. Everyday pick the cards and check if your child remembers the meanings. Get involved and make it a game by you guessing the meaning. Reward your child with every word he remembers. And when all the cards are over, make it a time for celebration.

If your child is older, push novels under his nose. You could start with thin novels and endeavour for fatter ones later. Give your child 2 novels of the same author and ask the differences in style or is there? Let him watch the movie based on the book and check if the director has understood the book and interpreted it well. In all these exercises, you have to be equally enthusiastic so read and do all that you say, to stay relevant with your child.

These activities are tedious and if you are working parents then it can get even more painful. But nowhere should you lose your nerve and get bitter or frustrated. If you lose it all attempts will be nullified and you will have to begin from the start. So keep your cool and give your child patience and most of all tell him that you love him above all no matter what. Your confidence in him will only better his and in return he will learn to show you that he loves you too.
