Taylormade R9 TP Irons - Perfect blend of Playability and Forgiveness

Jan. 8, 2010 - PRLog -- I have owned the Taylormade 300 Forged and R7 TP irons and was impressed with both sets which led me to purchase the new Taylormade R9 TP irons.  Upon receiving them, even though I saw and hit them beforehand, I was still a little anxious when I saw the large sole and topline of the 3 through 5 irons.  After taking them on the range and the course my anxiety quickly diminished.

I am a low ball hitter traditionally and when I launched a 7 iron higher than I used to hit my pitching wedge I was very pleasantly surprised.  Then I hit the 3 iron about the height of my previous 6 iron so for those low handicap players who have a problem getting the ball in the air these are a great set.  The ball doesn't rise but launches high immediately with lost of spin despite the new USGA conforming grooves for 2010.  I also hit a few shots out of the thick bermuda rough at my club.  I still caught a couple of flighers but not much more than the previous set I had (Cleveland CG Red irons).  I love the aesthetics of the 6 iron on down.  They have minimal offset so they still have a very good tour-like look at address.

The big difference players will see is in the long irons (2-5).  They have what Taylormade calls a "Velocity Chamber" that is supposed to increase ball speed on off center hits.  That is certainly true after hitting a few shots.  Even as a 0 handicap I was looking to replace my 3 and 4 irons with hybrids but this set will definitely delay that decision.  The long irons are almost a hybrid between a hybrid and long iron so looking down at that thick topline and what looks like a back cavity is going to take some getting used to for me but the benefits are substantial.

What I am really happy about was Taylormade's decision to but the KBS Tour shafts as stock shafts in these clubs.  The feedback is tremendous and the shot dispersion is certainly more limited than my previous Project X shafts.

In conclusion if you are high ball hitter and you are looking for a "players" set of irons these are not for you.  However; if you want a blend of performance and forgiveness, and you are considering replacing your long irons with hybrids, you should definitely give this set a try.
