Sixty eight years later, it still has a lock on the public imagination. So do other red letter days in history like Pearl Harbor Day. Why?

Dec. 6, 2009 - PRLog -- ROCKFORD, ILLINOIS - The 68th anniversary of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor is Monday, a day which launched the United States into World War II and changed the world.

The anniversary is one of a few key dates in history such as JFK assassination and 9-11 that have a grip on the imagination. And, according to author D.L. Shiloh who is working on a novel set after September 11th titled "Waiting for the End", those tough times can pull together - or tear apart - a land and its people.

"The attack on Pearl Harbor drew us into a war, which has changed history ever since," D.L. Shiloh said, whose father was station in the Navy at Pearl Harbor in the1950s. "History is linked, not some stand alone event because there are consequences.

"One lesson to take from World War II's aftermath is that peace is not made, it's built. Nations can make it happen. The U.S. and Japan have built peace the last sixty four years. We need to go about it using the tools and innovation we have, such as economics. Plus, we survived our own civil war, so we've shown we can live with differences. We are the template for so much success, but we just can't lose sight of the ball. It needs to be a win-win for everybody."

Shiloh is especially in tune with Pearl Harbor Day because of his past work with Nagasaki co-pilot Fred Olivi.

"Colonel Olivi's wish was that nuclear weapons wouldn't ever have to be used, after his generation used them," Shiloh said. "It would be wise to seek real solutions before events get out of hand."

"The death of JFK was a tragic experience but it spurred on change, which had benefits, but also caused a rift in society," Shiloh added. "There was a pulling together after 9-11 but we are split again; based on how close our elections have been, along with strong opinions of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars, we aren't on the same page as we were after 9-11. Pearl Harbor pulled a generation that had suffered economic hard times and ended up pulling them together. I look to when we can make that happen again."
