By: Matt Helphrey First, there are a few things that you can't or at least shouldn't do this job without. It is important to use goggles and layered clothing when working with insulation. A special face mask should be worn as well to keep the fiberglass, dust, and any other chemicals out of your lungs. I won't go into too much detail about why fiberglass insulation is always among the first choices as far as insulation is concerned. Just know that it does what it is supposed to do better and more efficiently than its competitors. It also comes at a somewhat cheaper price as well. One of the major drawbacks though of working with fiberglass is that it will poke and pry you if you are not careful. Try to keep off your skin and out of your lungs! Don't even try working with this stuff without using gloves and long sleeves. When working with fiberglass, you can either buy the fiberglass insulation in rolls or in polywrapped fiberglass batts. The batts are just a wrapped form of insulation making it safer for the person installing the installation. When applying the insulation as in adding it on to preexisting insulation, simply take the rolls and roll it out perpendicular to the floor joists. The general rule of thumb is to set them out at right angles compared to the preexisting insulation. When working in small crawlspace instead of an attic, choose the polywrapped fiberglass batts and make sure that they are thick enough to retain air in and lock the air out. Simply install the batts between the joists. They should fit nice and snug. That's all there is to it! Some of the polywrapped batts come equipped with a vapor lock barrier and/or perforated polyfilm. The polyfilm should be face up to keep your house warmer in the winter. Read all the included instructions before you begin the process. If you haven't done this job before, ask someone who has. It is a simple job and will save you money, but you still have to know how to do it correctly.*** # # # Matt is an avid article writer and has been writing to help others for quite some time.
