Tips For Staying Slim During The Holidays

•   Choose turkey instead of ham.

•   When cooking, skim the fat from the meat drippings before making the gravy and remove the skin before serving.

•   Cut potatoes into large chunks so that they will absorb less fat during the roasting process.

•   Season vegetable side dishes with lemon juice and herbs instead of heavy sauces.

•   Avoid using salt when cooking. (Excess salt promotes water retention, which leads to weight gain.)

•   Substitute angel food cake for other types of high-fat desserts and use fresh fruit for toppings.

•   Prepare holiday pies using evaporated skim milk and top with low- or fat-free ice cream or yogurt.

•   Rather than baste meats in fatty drippings, use wine or fat-free chicken broth.

•   Refrain from drinking alcohol or, at the very minimum, alternate with glasses of water.  

•   After eating, take a walk instead of lounging in front of the television.

•   Relax and get plenty of sleep because stress hormones tend to cause bodies to store fat, no matter how we are eating.
