Nov. 14, 2009 - PRLog -- Almost everyday we ask a customer "How much memory do you have in your computer?" and most of the time the answer is "I don't know". With holiday sales upon us and Microsoft Windows 7 being released all buyers need to fully understand the difference between the two. Honestly, the question can be very confusing considering computer have two types of memory storage - Hard Drive and RAM (Random Access Memory) Storage. Explaining the difference in the two can be very simply put in easy terms that anyone can understand.

First, we will discuss hard drive storage and how it effects the way your computer works. Your hard drive storage memory has a large capacity ranging from gigabytes to terabytes. It is the permanent storage for your computer and holds all your saved files and programs. The advantage is that it holds information even when your computer is turned off. The disadvantage is that it has moving part - a head that moves along metal platters when makes accessing data slower.

Next we have RAM (Random Access Memory) which comes in megabytes and gigabytes. RAM holds data while you work on a document or application which makes your computer operate faster. The advantages is that is a computer chip with no moving parts which makes it faster than hard drives. The disadvantage is that it is dependant on electrical power and when power is lost so is data.

Now to put it in easy terms - Hard drive and RAM storage can be compared to your hands and pockets. If you were a juggler you can store all your items in your pockets like hard drive storage. Whether you are juggling or not those items are safe from being lost. When you are juggling your hands are like RAM memory handling the items you are juggling. It works to keep the pockets free from having to store or handle the items. Unfortunately, if you stop moving your hands (removing the energy) all the items are dropped or lost. You have to keep moving (or supplying energy) to your hands in order to keep from losing the items.

We hope that this example helps you understand the difference and importance of hard drive and RAM memory storage. They are both very important and help your computer perform fast or slow if you do not have the correct amount. Make sure you do your research before you buy a computer or consult a computer sales and service specialist to assist you. Making a mistake in this error can lead to a lot of frustration and possibly additional cost being incurred.
