Obesity Linked to Cancer

Studies have shown that certain types of cancer are associated with excess body fat.

Nov. 11, 2009 - PRLog -- During the past 20 years, the percentage of overweight and obese adults and children has been steadily increasing in the United States. Lack of physical activity and overconsumption of high-calorie food are strongly associated with obesity.

To measure obesity, scientists use the body mass index (BMI) - BMI is equal to weight in kilograms divided by height in meters squared and provides a reasonable indicator of body fatness - see BMI calculator http://www.obesitysolutionsinternational.com/. More than 26 percent of Americans are obese (BMI of 30 or higher) and nearly a third of Americans are overweight (BMI of 25 to 30). It has been estimated that obesity-related diseases account for almost 10 percent of all medical spending in the United States.

Cancer is a condition characterized by abnormal cell growth and is the second-leading cause of death in the United States. Obesity increases the risk of heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure and strokes. Obesity is also linked to increased risk of certain types of cancer. Obesity is responsible for more than 100,000 cases of cancer in the United States each year. Avoiding weight gain can lower the risk of cancers of the breast (postmenopausal), endometrium (the lining of the uterus), colon, kidney, and esophagus. Regular physical activity lowers the risk of colon and breast cancers.

Researchers say that 49 percent of endometrial cancer cases, 35 percent of esophageal cancer cases, 28 percent of pancreatic cancer cases, 24 percent of kidney cancer cases, 21 percent of gallbladder cancer cases, 17 percent of breast cancer cases, and 9 percent of colorectal cancer cases are caused by excess body fat.
