Eco Building Booms in Low Economy as Australia shows Growing Your Own Means A Home

Buildings use 40% of total energy consumed*, 12.2% of the total amount of water consumed per day* and 40% of Australian waste is building waste*. These facts and, more notably affordable green solutions were released today in a 107 page study manual.

Aug. 16, 2010 - PRLog -- Why should you be green with envy about hemp homes? We tell you why.

It was over 10 years ago when The Hemp Builders commissioned a study to test the results of a technology developed by Klara Marosszeky. Based in Northern NSW, this study was headed by Professor of Construction innovation at the University of New South Wales to review the potential for a new affordable and sustainable building method. This report has recently been completed and shows a number of affordable options that could be used in all new buildings today.
The Building Code of Australia has a new draft statement that is expected to become the legislated national standard, expected around March 2010. The national standard will focus on radically increasing energy efficiency in design. “A process that may stump old school, change resistant designers and construction companies.” states Sales Manager for The Hemp Builders, “we have taken the initiative to preempt and even exceed these changes now as well as a commitment to staying abreast of emerging information and technologies, which is why we commissioned this study.” The new Building Codes will make new buildings at least 6 stars - the industry  measure of  energy efficiency. These calculations, and how they are worked out has been under discussion for over a year now and ensure that the building industry, a major polluter in the past, comes into alignment with current personal, political and global demands.
The report shows the potential of an old eco favorite, Industrial Hemp. Now grown legally in most countries, including more recently the states of NSW, QLD, VIC and TAS of Australia, this crop is showing to deserve the title of green.
This new technology allows industrial hemp to be utilized without further factory processing, therefore allowing one to ‘grow your own’ (home). No longer (see previous ‘hempcrete or hemcrete’) do farmers have to transport their crop for manufacturing but can sell direct to the public.
The results of this work have led to a noticeable increase in industrial hemp crops being grown to supply the increase in demand.
Such sustainable homes are not only affordable, but are capable of being fitted out with standard fittings found in modern affordable homes including solar panels, solar electricity, underground water tanks, bamboo flooring, spotted gum decks, eco wool insulation, green roof, and low impact (cement free) footings.
In recent times we have faced the ethical dilemma of choosing between economy OR environment. Now a win/win emerges; affordable designs, innovative technologies and government rebates. By 2011 it will be legislated that we must face up to our environmental impact.
True sustainability incorporates economy as a vital element. It seems you can follow your heart and your hip pocket, hence The Hemp Builders are happy to say their technology allows a hemp house to be built at a slightly lesser cost than your standard prefabricated brick veneer kit home.
Now 'green' is no longer a sales lever, but a legislated necessity.
