October is Fire Prevention Month.

The best way to avoid putting out a fire, is to not have a fire to put out in the first place. With the development of flameproof materials over the years you would think that unexpected fires would be a thing of the past; well you would be wrong.

Sept. 28, 2009 - PRLog -- Cartersville, Atlanta, Georgia -  Fire, when it’s in it’s infant stage, like on a candle, it’s nice, beautiful, inviting.  When it grows a little larger, like a campfire, it’s warming and cozy.  But sometimes when it gets out of control, it transforms into a living, breathing demon; sucking oxygen and devouring fuel wherever it can find it.  It has no conscience or concern for life and property.  It lives only to feed.  People all over the world and especially those who lived in California a few months ago, can attest to the lethal devastation that a fire can summon.  There is really only one cause for fire that we have no control over, lightning.  The caveman relied on lightning to obtain the first fire for warmth and cooking.  If the fire went out in his cave he had to wait for the next lightning strike to hit, find the burning tree or bush, then hopefully get it back to the cave without the flame extinguishing.  Later on we figured out that rubbing two sticks together would form heat from the friction and we could produce fire ourselves.  The more man evolved the more ways we figured out how we could create fire.  Now we’re trying to figure out countless and better ways to put fires out.  From water to foam chemicals, from sand to halongenated agents, man has come a long way in the last hundred years developing ways to extinguish fires… ways to kill the beast.   The majority of fires would never start though if it weren’t for man and his evolution. How “fire conscious” are you?  There are several things you can do that will greatly help to minimize your chances of accidentally starting a fire in your home.  First; make sure that if you burn candles, that you never leave the room with candles burning.  Second, never leave a pan on the stove unattended.  Third, never leave towels or potholders near the stove burners.  Fourth, never leave the room with an iron plugged in.  Fifth, never leave appliances, plug-ins, adaptors, or electronics plugged in around curtains or sheers.  Sixth, never leave your drier running while you are away from your home.  Seventh, never smoke in bed.  And lastly, make sure to change out you’re A/C or furnace filters on a regular basis.
