Computer games are currently saturating the toys and games industry because of their ability to ‘bring entertainment home’ during the economic downturn. However, it seems that consumers have almost completely forgotten about the benefits of the board game during the recession. After all, sales of board games have flourished during the last two recessions, so what’s happening?

Board games have generally been overshadowed by their digital counterparts, perhaps due to the lack of marketing and innovation in the area. However the recession provides an excellent reason for board games to return to the hearts and minds of consumers as they provide a cheaper form of in-house social entertainment. Depending on the number of players, game night does not have to cost more than £5 per participant (for a party of four); cheaper than a night out at the movies with pop corn and drinks. Staying at home has become more fashionable due to the recession and board games are a better option for friends who prefer to chat than sit across from a computer screen. It’s what players bring to the game that can make it exciting and fun.
