| From Switzerland to Swansea!Swansea Festival of Music and the Arts are one of only three venues to be lucky enough to hear Paul McCreesh's large-scale performance of Haydn's, The Creation.
By: Swansea Festival of Music and the Arts In this Haydn’s bicentennial year, the first concert of the Festival will see the masters of baroque and renaissance music, the Gabrieli Consort and Chorus perform what is considered by many to be one of Haydn’s supreme oratorios, The Creation, which charms and thrills with its dynamic choruses. Their highly acclaimed recording of this piece was released in March 2008 and won a Gramophone Award for Best Choral Recording. Conducted by their founder and artistic director Paul McCreesh, who is widely recognised for his authoritative and innovative performances on the concert platform and in the opera house, this is his own revision of the authorised version, sung in English, which he conducts from memory. The soloists for the evening are Scottish soprano Mhairi Lawson, English tenor Jeremy Budd and Welsh bass baritone Neal Davies. (biographies attached). The concert is preceded by a lecture at the Guildhall on 28 September - The Creation: Haydn’s Greatest Achievement - given by Prof. David Wyn Jones, Head of the School of Music at Cardiff University and author of a new biography of Haydn. The illustrated talk on this fascinating work explains the significance of its Festival performance. (Admission is free and includes a glass of wine) Tickets for the concert are available from the Grand Theatre Box Office on 01792 475715 Priced at £30, £22, £15 Festival Website: http://www.swanseafestival.org # # # News about activities, events and attractions in Swansea, Wales, UK.
