PRLog -- It is claimed that there are now more slaves on Earth than ever before in human history. Such a claim calls into question the nature of the freedom/bondage dichotomy which is explored in this novel. The central character, Mandy, is sold into slavery as a teenager, but she has been given the keys to freedom as a child, and can unlock it even from within the horrors that beset her as she grows into a woman. Gert Van Rooyen, is a building contractor who has imprisoned himself in a world of lust and indulgence. Facing financial difficulties he links up with an addictive prostitute, Joey Haarof, in a scheme to abduct young white girls, to be trafficked as sex slaves. Their scheme is exposed when one girl escapes, but both Van Rooyen and Haarhof “commit suicide,” so the fate of their victims remains a mystery. Richard Quested, Mandy's father, is trapped in an unhappy marriage. He sets out on a prolonged search for his daughter. Eventually he finds Mandy, but by this time he she is an adult, and he has discovered a measure of freedom from the Puritanism that bound him.
